VIDEO: WWF boss criticised for using "gay" as an insult

WWF describes itself as family friendly WWF describes itself as family friendly

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has criticised the Chairman of the Board of World Wrestling Entertainment for using the word 'gay' as an insult during a broadcast.

A recent episode of WWE/RAW on the USA Network included a birthday celebration for Vince McMahon featuring Cirque du Soleil performers.

As the performers bounced into the wrestling ring on springboard-type stilts, Mr McMahon said: "Those masks are really gay" and "just what every man wants on his birthday."

GLAAD said that as the leader of a well-known organisation he should know better.

"The WWE’s website states, “WWE is committed to family-friendly, PG content across all of its platforms including television programming, pay-per-view, digital media and publishing.”

"However, off-handedly using “gay” in a derogatory manner is anything but family-friendly," according to the GLAAD blog.

"WWE programming reaches 16 million viewers each week.

"McMahon needs to understand that the words he uses and how he uses them can greatly affect people’s lives."

GLAAD said they are "reaching out" to Mr McMahon and the USA Network.

Italian gays condemn football manager and call for hate crimes legislation

Arcigay is an LGBT rights group Arcigay is an LGBT rights group

A leading gay rights group in Italy has condemned comments by the country's football coach about homosexual players.

Arcigay said that LGBT people "don't want to be afraid anymore" after a series of attacks in Rome, including an arson attack on a gay club.

The coach of the Italian national football team, Marcello Lippi, said in an interview released yesterday that in "the current climate" it would be impossible for two of his players to be in a gay relationship.

"Imagine how a homosexual couple in football would be perceived," he said.

"Even if, socially, most people would support and understand such a situation, it would nonetheless become magnified and eventually would be viewed negatively."

In a statement on their website, Arcigay said:

"In these days when gay people watch helpless and overwhelmed in episodes of brutal violence against them … we hear yet another hypocritical justification of that system of media, politics and culture, which lawful discrimination of our loves and remains unmoved to the culture of our retrograde and provincial media.

"Why, dear Lippi, the players could not live gay love openly, when performing in front of each camera their flirtation?

"Words like these fortify the prejudice that homosexual relationships are more dirty and unspeakable, uttered by a person who plays an educational role model for millions of Italian boys playing soccer and believe sport as a model of social and cultural life.

"We are tired of hearing politicians, singers, coaches feeding, even through the unsaid, a climate poisoned by distrust and fear.

"We do not want to have more fear and we hope for public figures who have the courage to affirm the dignity of each person to live in the sunlight, their relationships, their loves."

On Tuesday night nighclub Qube, home of the LGBT Muccassassina festival, was targeted by arsonists - it was empty at the time.

A few days before a gay couple were assualted near Rome's gay village. One was stabbed and he is in a serious condition.

The city's rightwing mayor, Gianni Alemanno, has backed Arcigay's calls for anti-discrimination laws to help tackle homophobic violence.

Gay Prime Minister poll provokes homophobic response from Israeli MP

44% of Israelis may be ready for a gay Prime Minister 44% of Israelis may be ready for a gay Prime Minister

A poll for an Israeli newspaper that revealed that 44% of Israelis may be ready for a gay Prime Minister has provoked a vitriolic response from one of the country's MPs.

The Yediot Aharonot poll found 25% of respondents were certain they were "ready" for a gay PM and another 19% thought they might be.

The paper took its findings to National Union party MP Ya'akov Katz for comment.

The hirsute politician, who is on the rightwing fringe of Israeli politics, responded:

"I can't understand how a man can kiss another man.

"When I think about it, I want to vomit.

"When I think about a bearded man fondling another bearded man, it kills me."

Mr Katz also compared gay people to paedophiles.

"Could a man be prime minister who loves to sleep with sheep? With horses?

"Can a man whose orientation is for horses be prime minister? Can a man who likes girls aged five be prime minister?"

Israel's gay community was rocked by the murder of two people at a gay youth centre in Tel Aviv earlier this month.

15 were injured when a gunman opened fire on the venue, which was holding a meeting for LGBT teenagers.

Those killed were named as Liz Trubeshi, 16, of Holon and 26-year-old Nir Kat of Givatayim.

Gay networking event designed for twenty-something men

A new gay networking club in London has been designed specially for men in their twenties.

London Twenties was set up to give young gay men the opportunity to network without having to pay pricey fees or feel uncomfortable.

Each event is free of charge and attendees will be introduced through 15 minute periods of 'speed socialising'.

Founder Vishal Sumarria said: “I set up the group when I returned to London after studying abroad and wanted to make new friends.

"It can be very hard to meet new people in big cities and a lot of the networking groups ask attendees to be in a certain profession, or to be single and looking to meet someone.”

According to Sumarria, the group has grown from just five members to 280 in just 18 months. It includes students, bankers, art dealers and IT consultants.

The event is held monthly at alternate venues in Soho. The next London Twenties is scheduled to be held at The Edge bar on Wednesday September 16th.

Gay kiss for Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick

The upcoming series of teen drama Gossip Girl will see one of the male leads lock lips in a gay kiss.

The third series is currently in production in New York, and sources have revealed that Ed Westwick, who plays Chuck Bass, will have an encounter with a new gay character, university student Josh Ellis, played by Neal Bledose.

Gossip Girl has proved popular with gay fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

In 2008 Westwick's decision to share an apartment with co-star Chace Crawford led to rumours about their relationship.

Gossip blogs Perez Hilton and Queerty.com claimed they had been contacted by reporters at NY Daily News and The New York Post claiming to have proof the heartthrobs were a couple.

Crawford's publicist has issued a statement to Us Weekly confirming that he is "100 percent straight."

A contestant on ITV1 show X Factor has told a Sunday tabloid that he is bisexual.

Danyl Johnston's performance on Saturday night, the first of the new series of the talent show, was well received, with judge Simon Cowell calling it "the best first audition I've ever heard."

The 27-year-old teacher from Reading is tipped to win the series.

He told the News of the World:

"I am a massive flirt.

"I wouldn't rule out someone just because of their gender.

"I haven't been in that many relationships, only about four.

"It's been a year since I was last with someone - that's horrible!

"I hate boxes, so I don't like to call myself gay, straight or bisexual.

"But yeah, I'll admit that I have dated men."

Danyl also admitted that he finds Simon Cowell sexually attractive, "because he has a feisty attitude."

The popularity of talent show X Factor shows no sign of abating - Saturday's audience peaked at 11.7 million viewers.

Kylie Minogue: Greatest Gay Icon?

The beautiful Aussie songstress has enraptured her American fans for over a decade and as she prepares to embark on her first stateside tour, Minogue hasn’t forgotten the love and support of her favorite fan base: the gay community.

88803210

In a recent interview with LGBT magazine Instinct, this singer recalled the hardships she faced early in her music career after leaving the successful Aussie/UK soap Neighbours. "When I started out in music, going from acting to singing, that transition was very successful, but I also got flack for it. Many hurtful things were said. It wasn't easy,” she remembers.

"I was only 19 and I think the gay audience kind of picked up on that and decided to defend me and adopt me,” Minogue says of her loyal gay fans. “They saw I was being criticized for being myself."

Kylie She was once voted the greatest gay icon of all time, besting veteran diva’s like Cher, Liza, Dolly, and Judy Garland for the title. At the time, Minogue reflected, "A lot of record companies market directly towards 'the pink pound'. But I never did that. They kind of adopted me instead.

"Somebody once said to me, 'Gay icons, there's a lot of tragedy in their lives. But you don't really have that.' I said, 'I've had a lot of tragic hairdos and outfits. I think that makes up for it.'"

Catch the costumes, choreography and Kylie-fever when the first ever US tour kicks off in San Francisco on September 30th. You can also keep up with the icon’s everyday on her Twitter.

VIDEO: Bucharest crowd boo Madonna's defence of gays and Roma

Madonna was booed in Romania

Romanian fans of singer Madonna showed their displeasure during a concert yesterday when she condemned discrimination against Roma people and gays.

The 51-year-old American performer is currently on tour.

During her concert in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, she said:

"We don't believe in discrimination against anyone.

"We believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone…right?

"Gypsies, homosexuals, people who are different — everyone is equal and should be treated with respect, OK?

"Let's not forget that."

There were loud boos from the crowd as well as some cheering.

Romania joined the EU in 2007, but it remains socially conservative.

A poll conducted last year found 68% of Romanians in the poll thought homosexuality is a 'bad choice' and 36% think punitive measures should be taken against gays, from fines to jail.

Nearly half of the 1,200 respondents said they would not want contact with someone living with HIV or AIDS. Two thirds said they would be uncomfortable with a gay neighbour.

30% think children with AIDS should be segregated in school.

Romania was one of the last European countries to decriminalise homosexuality, in 1996, and a further law banning "manifestations of homosexuality" was finally repealed in 2001.

In 2002 the age of consent was equalised at 15.

Roma people, sometimes called Gypsies, suffer violence and discrimination across Europe, including incidents in Italy.

A EU Fundamental Rights Agency report on the Roma revealed a bleak picture for the estimated 12 million Roma in the EU.

"Roma reported the highest overall levels of discrimination across all areas surveyed. 66-92% of Roma (depending on the country) did not report their most recent experience of discrimination to any competent authority.

"65-100% of the Roma respondents reported lack of confidence in law enforcement and justice structures."

Britain among countries backing Budapest Pride

Budapest Pride starts on Sunday

The Budapest embassies of the UK, US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, France and Germany have expressed their support for Pride events in the city.

Budapest Pride was the target of violent fascist attacks last year.

An estimated 1,500 people participated in an LGBT solidarity demonstration and Hungarian police were forced to use tear gas and a water cannon to clear the route for marchers to leave.

There were also violent scenes at Pride in 2007.

Today a joint press release was issued by the Embassies of Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"On the occasion of the 2009 Budapest Pride Festival, we express our support for, and solidarity with, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in Hungary," they said.

"We support the right of these communities to use this traditional occasion to march together peacefully and lawfully, in order to express their desire to end the silence surrounding the specific issues that affect them.

"Human rights — including justice, equality, humanity, respect and freedom of expression — and the rule of law are the foundations upon which democratic states are built.

"Indeed, international human rights law is grounded on the premise that all individuals are entitled to the same rights and freedoms, as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"It is this respect for fundamental human values that obliges governments to protect all citizens from violence and to ensure that all people enjoy equal opportunities.

"Today, many individuals face discrimination, both systemic and overt, based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

"Our governments seek to combat such discrimination by promoting the human rights of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"We urge all governments to ensure that neither sexual orientation nor gender identity form the basis for criminal penalties."

Budapest Pride begins on Sunday and includes events such as parties and a film festival alongside seminars and self-defence classes.

The promotion of gay rights by UK diplomats is not without controversy.

Last month the British ambassador to Poland was told by the country's civil rights ombudsman he is "exceeding his authority" by promoting a gay Pride march in Warsaw.

Ric Todd was accused by Catholic groups of "representing the 'homosexual lobby" after he gave Polish gay rights leaders a UK Guide To Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender People And Their Rights, translated into Polish.

Whoopi Goldberg records message of support for Budapest Pride

Hollywood star Whoopi Goldberg has recorded a special message of support for a Pride event marred by violent attacks in recent years.

The Oscar-winning actor's message will be played publicly on Sunday, the first day of Pride in Budapest.

"Whoopi has filmed and traveled in Hungary, and has spoken publicly of her love for Hungary," Pride orgainisers said.

"Now hear what she has to say about the situation of Gay Pride in Hungary."

Pride week includes events such as parties and a film festival alongside seminars and self-defence classes.

Budapest Pride was the target of violent fascist attacks last year.

An estimated 1,500 people participated in an LGBT solidarity demonstration.

SWAT officers called in from all over Hungary followed the march and intervened when necessary.

The march was supposed to end in a cordoned-off area where a concert was going to take place.

It was cancelled as a neo-Nazi mob had beaten up the performer and police were forced to use tear gas and a water cannon to clear the route for marchers to leave.

The marchers were then escorted by police to nearby metro stations as the mob was dispersed.

Pride in Budapest in 2007 was plagued by skinheads and fascists shouting abuse and throwing items such as beer bombs, smoke bombs and petrol bombs at the peaceful marchers.

In the week leading up to last year's Pride two gay businesses in Budapest were attacked with petrol bombs.

22 police forces to march at Manchester Pride

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/images/prideflagmanc.jpg

Police officers and staff from all over the UK will be in Manchester this weekend for Pride.

Representatives of 22 UK forces will be joined on the parade by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Chief Constable Peter Fahy and Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney and Merseyside Assistant Chief Constable Helen King.

This Saturday more than 270 officers and staff from forces across the country will lead the parade as Manchester Pride celebrates its 19th year.

PC Darren Haslam, coordinator of GMP's Lesbian and Gay Staff Affiliation (LAGSA), said:

"Its another fantastic response that we’ve had this year, there has been an increase in the numbers taking part and also the number of police forces represented.

"For me it shows that confidence is slowly increasing amongst our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) staff and walk through the streets of Manchester proudly as a police officer or member of police staff.“

"By taking part in Pride will hopefully send out a strong and clear message to give confidence to the LGBT communities, that you can be gay or trans and work for the police."

For the second year running, GMP is one of the main sponsors of Manchester Pride.

Officers will be providing information about how to report hate crime throughout Pride.

"Hate crime is not something that LGB&T individuals should just have to put up with," said PC Haslam.

"GMP is committed to erasing hate crime from our communities.

"Anyone who has been targeted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity should report it to police.

"We will take you seriously."

Manchester Pride Big Weekend is a four-day extravaganza including headline performances from 1980s hit makers Human League and Bananarama, new acts Little Boots and Frankmusik and tabloid favourite Peter Andre.

Ted Kennedy Remembered as LGBT Hero

71136694 When Sen. Ted Kennedy's death was reported, the leader of the Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solmonese, said we mourned the loss of the nation's "greatest champion and strongest voice for justice, fairness, and compassion."

"There was no greater hero for advocates of LGBT equality than Sen. Ted Kennedy," Solmonese reflected. "From the early days of the AIDS epidemic to our current struggle for marriage equality, he has been our protector, our leader, our friend. He has been the core of the unfinished quest for civil rights in this country, and there is now a very painful void."

Senator Kennedy hailed from a famously influential family. Two of his brothers, President John F. Kennedy and onetime attorney-general and presidential candidate Bobby Kennedy, were tragically assassinated, in 1963 in and 1968, respectively. Years earlier he lost his oldest brother, Joe, who was killed in action during World War II.

The senator from Massachusetts was a strong proponent of LGBT rights and opposed the ban on gays in the military. Initially elected to the Senate in 1962, during his tenure he fought to strengthen and expand hate-crimes laws to cover victims who were targeted specifically for their sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability. In the 1980s, while conservatives dismissed AIDS as a "gay plague," Kennedy called for action and fought for the funding of AIDS research. He was a tireless warrior for liberal causes in his 40-plus years of public service.
A champion of women, minorities, and LGBT people, Senator Kennedy believed “the controversy about the Moral Majority arises not only from its views, but from its name -- which, in the minds of many, seems to imply that only one set of public policies is moral and only one majority can possibly be right.”
He supported Barack Obama's successful campaign for president in 2008 and told voters, "With Barack Obama, we will turn the page on the old politics of misrepresentation and distortion. With Barack Obama, we will close the book on the old politics of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay."

The Boys of Summer

Seven friends in Speedos, summer in Fire Island, and a new Miley Cyrus single. It was supposed to be just for fun. Then Miley tweeted that she couldn't stop watching the spoof video of her hit "Party in the USA."

The Boys of Summer

What started out as a few good friends setting out to create a memento of their summer getaway on Fire Island has turned into an Internet sensation that has been simultaneously racking up thousands of hits on YouTube and lighting up the blogosphere.

When New Yorkers David Fudge, Ted Donath, Colin Stark, Brian Davidson, Richard Davis, Ryan Slyper, and Justin Garlinghouse decided to take a Flip mini digital camcorder and hit the beach to make their own summer party video, using Miley Cyrus’s new single “Party in the USA” as their soundtrack, they had no idea so many people would pay attention.

But that is precisely what happened.

Only one day after the video hit the Web, gossip scribe Perez Hilton had already posted the video on his website and teen pop diva Cyrus had tweeted that she was “obsessed” with the feel-good parody of her latest hit. Even more telling is the fact that, as of Wednesday morning (three days after its debut), the video had garnered over 150,000 views -- and David, the mastermind/director behind the clip, had scored nearly 1,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel. All of which suggests that the video -- which is humorously titled “Party in the FIP” -- is not simply a sensation, it’s a smash hit.

“I never imagined that this video would get so much attention, especially in such a short amount of time. And not just in the U.S., but all over the world,” David told Advocate.com, seeming a bit bewildered by the video’s popularity. “It started out as just a fun project, and now we have hundreds of people asking us to make more.”

The Boys of Summer

David’s sentiments are echoed by his partners in crime in making the video, who are all equally nonplussed by their instant Internet celebrity. Richard notes that he is “thrilled that people are able to relate to... great friends enjoying an even better vacation."

Brian seconds the sentiment: "I never thought my summer vacation would be seen throughout the world!”

Along those same lines, Justin chimes in to say, “Making this video was truly a blast. I was honestly shocked to see how many people not only viewed it online but also really enjoyed it! I'm so happy to see that we're not the only ones who think our crazy antics are funny.”

Meanwhile Ryan, who admits that he didn’t know the lyrics to the song prior to the shoot and had to be “fed his lines,” initially had some reservations about how quickly the video was catching on with folks across the worldwide Web. But he soon got on board. “After an hour or so of regrets, I realized that we are just a group of guys having a summer of sun, fun, and Miley,” he says. “It's all fun and games until you are rolling around the beach in a Speedo lip-synching for your life."

The Boys of Summer

Asked why they decided to make the video, the guys all agree that they just liked Miley’s “Party” single and thought it was the perfect song for summer vacation 2009, but Colin offers one further reason. “Well, since we couldn't be a part of Destiny's Child, we decided to make our own video. I'm excited to see so many people noddin' their head like yea to our video,” he says.

As for what comes next, David says they’ll “keep making [videos] as long as people keep enjoying them.” However, they’re in no hurry -- just as this first video happened organically, they expect that any future clips will happen in the same way.

“This was done in a spirit of fun,” says Ryan. “And any other videos will be done in that same spirit.”

Charlize, Whitney, and Sandra and......

In this week's installment of what's hot in entertainment, Whitney's long-awaited comeback gets us dancing in our seats, Chris Pine freaks us out in an upcoming thriller, and the charming Mila Kunis keeps us entertained in Extract.

Hot Sheet: Charlize, Whitney, and Sandra

Movies...

- All About Steve : It’s the year of Sandra Bullock. Just two months after Sandy had the biggest hit of her career with The Proposal comes this gem, about a slightly off-kilter woman who crosses the country in search of a man she had one date with. Hell, if that man were Bradley Cooper, I might just hop a bus too. But seriously, this movie runs the risk of being too much Two If By Sea and not enough While You Were Sleeping. If All About Steve tanks, Sandy has another chance in November to redeem herself with the football dramedy The Blind Side.

- Carriers : Chances are this Invasion of the Body Snatchers–type horror flick would have never seen the light of day had star Chris Pine not just made it big in Star Trek. Want the proof? Carriers isn't even opening in New York or Los Angeles. But if you're in Boston or Phoenix, now's your chance to see Pine in action -- as he looked in 2006, when this film was made.

- Extract : The man who brought you Office Space is back with another "fucked-up work experience" comedy, complete with Jason Bateman doing his standard bumbling everyman, Ben Affleck in some truly tacky extensions, and Mila Kunis, cleavage to the heavens, as the sexy new girl. Best-looking bit of this movie: Sordid Lives/Donnie Darko star Beth Grant (she of "Sparkle Motion" fame) as the loud-mouthed assembly line employee.

Hot Sheet: Charlize, Whitney, and Sandra

Music...

- I Look to You by Whitney Houston: Whitney releases her first album in seven years, and let us say -- having heard the album at a listening session with a glowing Ms. Houston in attendance -- it's a blast. Highlights include the club-ready "Nothin' But Love" and the Diane Warren–penned first single, "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" (we know, Warren usually writes treacle, but this song is actually moving). Expect I Look to You to be one of the biggest sellers of the year. Just for fun, here's a little Whitney throwback for you:

- Love Is the Answer by Barbra Streisand: The title is beyond trite, but at least Barbra looks good in the just-released cover art. The album comes out September 29, and will feature jazz standards and collaborations between the legend and sultry singer Diana Krall.

Other albums on our radar include Humbug from English rockers Arctic Monkeys, One Love from French DJ David Guetta (he of the amazing Kelly Rowland duet "When Love Takes Over"), Ellipse from former Frou Frou singer Imogen Heap, and No Baggage from Cranberries wailer Dolores O’Riordan.

On Tour: In live music news, gay-friendly pop star Jason Mraz (whose single "I'm Yours" just set a Billboard record for staying on the Hot 100 list for 70 weeks) tours Northern California this weekend. Meanwhile, Britney takes her Circus tour to Boston and Philly this weekend before heading to the Southeast early next week, with stops in Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, and Greensboro, N.C.

Hot Sheet: Charlize, Whitney, and Sandra

DVDs...

- Rudo y Cursi : That sizzling south-of-the-border duo Gael García Bernal y Diego Luna star as poor half-brothers who learn valuable life lessons when their soccer skills take them from a rural banana plantation to glamorous Mexico City. Unfortunately, the actors don't venture into homoerotic Y Tu Mamá También territory here, but their undeniable chemistry made this into one of Mexico's biggest box office hits.

- Monster: Pretty woman Charlize Theron De Niro'd herself into an acting heavyweight and collected nearly every imaginable acting honor when she took on the role of Aileen Wuornos, the lesbian prostitute/serial killer who was executed in 2002. The acclaimed 2003 film makes its debut on Blu-ray.

- 17 Again : Let’s be real -- at some point or another, you've probably gazed upon those shirtless pics of Zac Efron that seem to circulate the Internet with eerie regularity. So I'll save you the trouble of wondering: Zac spends the first five minutes of 17 Again shirtless, and the next hour and a half attempting to become the next Tom Hanks in this Big-in-reverse comedy. He actually doesn't fare too badly at either.

- Californication: The Complete Second Season : In a case of art imitating life, David Duchovny plays a sex addict who also indulges in booze and drugs. OK, so the X-Files hunk is only guilty of the sex part, but it certainly makes for engaging television -- especially for Southern Californians. Plus, brush up on the series in time for season 3, which boasts a multi-episode arc by Kathleen Turner.

Sigourney: Parents Thank Me for Bobby

Sigourney: Parents Thank Me for Bobby

Actress Sigourney Weaver said she has been "very heartened" by fans of her film Prayers for Bobby, for which she earned an Emmy nomination.

"A lot of parents come up to me on the street and say how much they appreciate the film," Weaver, 59, told E! Online.

In the TV movie Weaver played Mary Griffith, the Bible-toting mother of a gay son named Bobby who after years of persecution committed suicide. After his death Griffith became an advocate for gay rights. The film is based on the Griffiths' true story.

However, it is still hard to see whether the film, which premiered in January 2009 on Lifetime, changed the way that gays are viewed in a society where Proposition 8, which repealed same-sex marriage rights in California, reflects the will of the majority.

"I was very disheartened because I love the movie and I do think it will do some good," Weaver said, "but when I read that the poll numbers in California hadn't changed at all since the referendum, I was just shocked."

Live Nation Cancels Antigay Artist

Live Nation Cancels Antigay Artist

Concert promoter Live Nation canceled a series of upcoming shows by Jamaican dancehall star Buju Banton (pictured) on Thursday after gay rights activists pressured the company to drop the antigay performer through an e-mail campaign, reports Change.org.

Banton was scheduled to perform in October at House of Blues venues in Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas, and Houston, among other dates and locations. However, last week, activists began contacting the Beverly Hills–based Live Nation to express their objections to the promotion of his violent antigay lyrics.

In songs such as “Boom, Bye Bye,” from 1988, Banton calls for the torture and murder of gay men. “If a guy comes near me,” he sings, “then his skin must peel. Burn him up bad like an old tire wheel.”

Live Nation announced plainly that the concerts by Banton were canceled, and that refunds would be available to ticket holders.

Banton has long been opposed by LGBT activists because of his antigay lyrics and alleged behavior. In 2006 he was acquitted of charges that he assaulted a group of gay men in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. In 2007 he signed the Reggae Compassionate Act, in which artists vow to refrain from singing antigay lyrics or making homophobic statements, but he later denied that he took the pledge.
