- Halloween II : Rob Zombie has a word for you Halloween purists, and that's "suck it." Yes, technically that’s two words, but if you're a fan of Rob Zombie's movies then you know that counting is only something you do when you have a house of corpses and you need to know how many. And those corpses get busy piling up in this sequel to the remake of a movie that already had a sequel. So this is the sequel that’s also a remake of a sequel. Or something.
- The Final Destination (pictured): The addition of a simple "the" to the title changes the game entirely. Kind of like how Fast & Furious was a totally different movie from The Fast & the Furious. Now, in this fourth installment of the wildly entertaining mechanized-death-stalks-doomed-teens franchise, we are led to believe that Death will finally be defeated and be allowed a long vacation from constructing elaborate killing scenarios. Hope not, because these movies are a blast.
- Taking Woodstock : Did you know a gay guy secured the location of the legendary Woodstock concert? Apparently we also invented computers, Desperate Housewives, and wrote the "Hallelujah" chorus, so getting a few thousand hippies to drop acid in the mud doesn't seem too far out of our grasp as a community.
Get to a theater...
- And Sophie Comes Too : Meryl Cohn, a.k.a. syndicated columnist Ms. Behavior and author of Do What I Say: Ms. Behavior's Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette, is also an award-winning playwright. She's written a musical called Insatiable Hunger, which is slated to star Lea DeLaria when it opens in Provincetown this fall. Meanwhile, And Sophie Comes Too will be presented as part of the Fringe Festival by the veteran gay theater company The Other Side of Silence (TOSOS). Three daughters, one of them a boi-to-be, attend the bedside of their coma-ridden mother. Not a weepie. Hijinks ensue.
Get cozy on the couch...
- The Informers : It's the 1980s and louche, gorgeous rich teens are snorting coke and getting polymorphously perverse with each other. Is it any surprise that this film is adapted from a book by Bret Easton Ellis? The stellar cast includes Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Chris Isaak, Amber Heard, Lou Taylor Pucci, Mickey Rourke, and, in one of his final roles, Brad Renfro.
- Newcastle (pictured): Hot Australian surfer dudes and queer subtext -- what more could you want from a movie? Invite your favorite bro over, pop a few brewskies, and double-bill this with Shelter ; it’s a perfect formula for finally getting into his board shorts.
- Asian Queer Shorts : This compilation features five sexy short films that received acclaim and awards at film festivals around the world. From teen crushes to a white guy’s first brush with “yellow fever,” these fun and fascinating films explore many different facets of the queer Asian experience.
