Melrose Place Remake Gets Its Gay

Melrose Place Remake Gets Its Gay

It was only a matter of time before the producers of the Melrose Place remake -- scheduled to premiere September 8 on the CW -- announced who'd be playing the show's resident gay guy. Filling original gay resident Doug Savant's shoes? Former Playgirl centerfold and Sex and the City hottie Victor Webster.

And for those who fear Webster's Caleb will suffer the same bland fate as Savant's Matt, producers assure fans that they're intent on painting Caleb as a fully fleshed-out character.

Caleb will first appear in the show's second episode, according to After Elton. Caleb Brewer "smokes cigars, likes the Los Angeles Lakers, collects sports memorabilia, drinks scotch, likes guys, and is not afraid to admit it."

Sex and the City fans might remember Webster for his memorable appearance as Samantha Jones's afternoon insider trading/bed buddy.

Producers have confirmed that Webster will appear on the show frequently throughout the first season.

Meet "Melrose Place"'s new smokin' hot gay male character

After Monday's panel for Melrose Place at the Television Critics Association panel in Los Angeles, I cornered MP's executive producer Todd Slavkin to ask about Caleb, the show's gay character. While we'd already learned that Caleb was going to be a non-stereotypical gay character, the actor playing the part hadn't yet been cast the last time I checked with the network. Slavkin confirmed the role is going to be played by Victor Webster.

Webster has been around for quite awhile including appearances on Sex and the City, Harper's Island, Lincoln Heights and many other shows.

Here is what Slavkin told me about Caleb:

  • His name is Caleb Brewer and we meet him in Episode 2
  • He is Ella Simms' boss at WPK
  • He smokes cigars, likes the Los Angeles Lakers, collects sports memorabilia, drinks Scotch, likes guys and is not afraid to admit it.
  • He is an archetype that hasn't been explored as much on television and the show is bringing that into the fold
  • So far he's in episodes two, three, five, six and appears somewhat frequently
  • We see some of his personal life, but Slavkin wouldn't divulge any details
  • He's a very masculine guy.

Webster is certainly very pretty and fits right in with the Melrose Place image. Hopefully, he'll rate more than there "barely there" status.
