About Gay Buenos Aires

Roll-over Rio! Boys in the know fly three extra hours south to Buenos Aires where the mighty River Plate empties its load into the Atlantic Ocean and passions flare in a land of Polo and Tango!

About Gay Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has a well-deserved reputation as a hot spot for queer travelers and is increasingly described as the most gay-friendly in South America. The city has become the number-one destination for gay tourism because it doesn’t follow the ghetto model. Quite the opposite; it encourages integration. Gays and lesbians are estimated as being as high as 15% to 20% among international tourists, and many mainstream places stress their gay-friendliness.

About Gay Buenos Aires

Two events – the grand opening of five-star gay hotel Axel in the San Telmo neighbourhood, and playing host to the fourth Gay World Cup of Soccer – make it clear Buenos Aires is investing in gay tourism. The gay liberation movement is championed by the Communidad Homosexual Argentina (Tomás Liberti 1080; +54-11/4361-6382; www.cha.org.ar, informacion@cha.org.ar), which publishes the monthly newsletter Vamos a Andar.

About Gay Buenos Aires

Leaving behind the repressed, conservative mores that prevailed under military rule, Argentina was the first Latin American country to recognize homosexual civil unions.

Called the Paris of South America, it combines the elegance of Europe and the soul of Latin America in a cosmopolitan metropolis rich in architecture, history, film, theatre, arts, dance and music. Combine this with the city’s enormous collection of bars, dance clubs, restaurants, and tango halls catering to the community, no other city in Latin America rivals what Buenos Aires has to offer for visiting gays and lesbians.

About Gay Buenos Aires

For Europeans and North Americans at least, Argentina is silly cheap. You can stay in a fab hotel for £15-20 a night and eat out royally with wine for £3-4 a head. Naturally, do still keep an eye on your wallet, but - with police on every corner - you're probably safer here than you are back home. And you'll certainly be warmer in a southern summer that spans November to March, especially amidst humidity which bubbles up frequent refreshing thunder storms.

Dinner for two with mouthwatering beef (the country is justifiably famous for its meat), cocktails and some of the best wine on earth -- $30. A visit to a fantastic local massage therapist -- $12/hour. Thinking bigger, many Americans are scarfing up land and apartments. How about a pretty nice one-bedroom in a swank part of town for $50,000? That's less than a parking spot in a grimy section of New York City.

About Gay Buenos Aires

Porteños (Buenos Aires-born people) are open, warm and friendly, which adds to the city’s appeal. The 3 million inhabitants of central BA bustle about its American-style grid street system with wide avenues and tall Deco thirties scrapers. And, States-style, there is also one psychotherapist for every thirty of the population - Freud has seen off the Pope. That said, the people themselves, and much of the colonial architecture, are unmistakably European: essentially a heady mix of Spanish and indigenous, with a large scoop of Italian thrown in - as you'll tell from the local district names, mamma-mia cadences and sizzling pizzerias. They also famously like their meat - with or without a pulse. And one final note, most everyone under 30 speaks English.

About Gay Buenos Aires
The vast majority of the city's residents are descended from a huge influx of immigrants, primarily from Italy and Spain, with many other European nationalities represented. Don't be surprised to see many blond, blue-eyed locals. Like the native tango -- with its roots in the brothels of the early 20th century -- Argentines are both sexy and serious. Men and women dress up but, like New Yorkers, tend to eschew colors for a darker palette. Gym culture has entered the zeitgeist and, to the joy of foreign gay boys, local porteños are often buff and incredibly handsome (many with dark hair and blue eyes).

Buenos Aires has a thriving gay and lesbian scene. It's one of the most impressive on the South American continent, rivaled only by Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.

About Gay Buenos Aires

The queer quarter mainly spans the Recoleta, Barrio Norte and Palermo Chico districts just north east of the city centre, and falling into two distinct clusters where it's easy to combine a couple of bars with going onto nearby clubs.

About Gay Buenos Aires

Barrio Norte has always been the traditional gay neighborhood of Buenos Aires. A word of warning: Argentineans eat around 11pm, hit the bars around 1am and will rarely enter a club until after 2am. You will need your early evening 'disco nap' if you are to last the course.

About Gay Buenos Aires

However with the rapid gentrification of San Telmo, this historic neighborhood has become home to several small gay bars and restaurants. Narrow streets paved with original cobblestones create a special atmosphere in an area that’s home to antique stores, art galleries, street performers and tango clubs.

About Gay Buenos Aires

Others places to visit are downtown, Puerto Madero, Recoleta and Palermo, Soho and Hollywood, which attracts a gay following for its eccentric fashion sense, bars, international cuisine and art galleries.

About Gay Buenos Aires

BA can be described as a small-scale version of New York. There is a "Fifth Avenue" (Av. Santa Fe), a "Seventh Avenue" (Arenales street) full of designer shops, a "Broadway" (Av. Corrientes.) that's full of theaters such as Sky-Opera, Gran Rex, Lola Membrives, Teatro General San Martín and the famous Luna Park area, a Greenwich Village-like neighborhood (Barrio Norte), and a mini "Central Park" (Bosques de Palermo).

About Gay Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires clubs, bars and restaurants are open until early morning, when you can grab a café con leche (coffee with milk) and medialunas (croissants) before heading to sleep.

This unforgettable city should be walked to feel its vibration and soul.

And even if gastronomy is not your priority, be sure to visit one of the restaurants on Corrientes or Lavalle for a bife de chorizo (famous Argentine beefsteak cut) and a parrilla (grilled meats). They are absolute musts!

DON'T CRY FOR ME

About Gay Buenos Aires

If you see only one tourist site in Buenos Aires, make sure it's Museo Evita in the Palermo district. It's loaded with her dresses, shoes and hats. She was one of Argentina's biggest fag hags -- surprise, surprise -- and here you'll find out more about those gay designers and hairdressers who gave her that touch of star quality.

WHO NEEDS WATER?

About Gay Buenos Aires

Unlike Rio, Buenos Aires itself doesn't really have beaches. Still, in February and March there's no shortage of men and women skimpily sunning themselves in the parks of Recoleta and Palermo.

About Gay Buenos Aires

Beachgoers head to Mar del Plata, a few hours south of Buenos Aires. Local travel company Calu Travel (www.calutravel.com.ar) has its own gay resort down there.

In February, gay men in the know head to the nearby Province of Entre Rios for Argentina's little-known Carnaval de Gualeguaychú (www.carnavaldelpais.com.ar). It's got all the hot bodies of Rio, and the spectacle runs every weekend in February.

WINE

Get to know Argentinian wine while you're in B.A. Great native reds like Malbec and Mendoza are cheap--and rich and fruity and satisfying. You can buy wine at the corner grocery.

Visitors relish the abundance of outdoor cafés, the quality of the pastry, coffee, and wine -- try some of the award-winning Malbecs -- and the idiosyncratic pronunciation of Spanish with its soft, almost silent "s" and "zh" sound substituting for "ll."

A Night Out in Buenos Aires

Gay Bar Buenos AiresBuenos Aires is similar to most major Spanish cities in that things begin late. No self-respecting person would want to be seen in a club before 2am, and most clubs stay open until 7am. The best thing to do is have a late dinner and then go to a pre-dance bar. Don't be surprised if you see people still arriving at restaurants to start their dinner at 1 a.m. Discos open at about 1:30 a.m., but no one arrives before 2:30, and the crowd doesn't peak until 4:00.

Most Argentineans like to go out at the weekends so bars and clubs can be rather quiet during the week, Fridays and Saturdays being the best nights to go out. Do your sightseeing on weekdays and save the weekends for clubbing!

Between dinner and dancing, most people go to bars to have some drinks, meet friends and decide which disco they are going to later. Most dance clubs have cover charges in the range of $15, generally including appetizers or even dinner.

The first main queer quarter cluster is to be found in streets off Avenida Santa Fé. Check out Men 2 Men Bar (formerly Punto G(, open every day with stripper and drag shows - staple parts of BA's bar life. More of the same can be found in the nearby stylish basement dive that is Search, in a little street were rent commonly roam - open daily from 11pm.

Bulnes LuoungeMore fun and more obvious than both is Titanic Club in a side-street yet further along Santa Fé. Sink down into a metallic, grey, gay pre-dance basement bar with - you guessed it - strippers, who use the entire length of the stage-cum-bar to strut their stuff. Shows all end in the same naked hard-cock action, but these muscle boys ring the costume changes to death along the way - anything from animals to spacemen, via Ancient Egypt. Again, open daily but this time from the dazzlingly early hour of 7pm.

You are now well placed for one of either two nearby clubs. Contramano - open Tue-Sat from 12am and Sunday from 8pm - has one mid-size dance floor, surrounded by mirrors and full of 30-somethings. It is the longest running gay club in Buenos Aires, playing a mix of pop and Latin music. “Contramano” is very central and also a good bet if you want to go out mid-week.

There are some nice cosy tables back near the main bar, and you can head upstairs to another, slightly darker bar, and then up once more to where it's darker still! Pretty cruisy and unpretentious all said.

AmerikaThe nightlife is best during the weekends. Check out our Alsina (formerly Palacio's) scorching-hot Sunday T-dance. It's especially nice since it starts (relatively) early at about 11 p.m.

Equally cruisy but completely different is nearby Angel's with its two dance floors and two bars open Thursday to Sunday from 12am and catering for a mix of young disco boy babe bunnies, TVs and TGs. You'll either love it or hate it.

The Sub ClubThe other main bar-club cluster is to be found just north at the junction of Avenida Cordoba and the street called Gascon. You'll see some of the same TV's that were at Angel's at the Bach Bar on Cabrera, open Tues-Sun from 10pm. But the main style haunt is definitely Sitges on Cordoba itself, open Weds-Sun from 10.30pm and - reaching far back, bar beyond bar - is packed with pre-club posers propping up walls or lilted at tables.

If your music tastes are more eclectic take a short cab ride to “Oxen” a massive new club with a young crowd and live entertainment. “Oxen” is open both Fridays and Saturdays as is the well established “Bunker”; although it is a bit further from the main downtown area.

Palacio Alsina (Fridays, with a Tea Dance on Sundays from 6pm-midnight))

GlamMany are just itching to get down GLAM, back on Cabrera again but much further down than Bach Bar. Open Thurs-Sat from 1am, GLAM has one dance floor playing all the latest tunes, two bars, a pleasant patio where you can actually talk and a dark room upstairs where there isn't much talking. Cheap, the place gets very crowded on Saturdays, not least because some use it is a springboard onto the other club in the area - Amerika, back on Gascon.

Bach BarFridays and Saturdays, shirtless hunks head to Amerika and take to the beat on the main dance floor and in surrounding levels throughout the club. Don't even think of hitting the place before 2:00 am. Imposing Palacio is giving it a run for its money on Fridays and Sundays. This impressive dance space is built into a former multistory factory. As the colored lights flash, its high ceiling and vaulted cast-iron ornamentation give an almost unworldly sensation as you dance.

GlamAh, Amerika: the biggest gay disco in BA, open Sat 1am-8am, and a bizarre experience. The truth is that it has a very mixed clientele, with lots of straight lads looking for easy girls and free booze - all you can drink for the 15 peso entry! There are two dance floors - the main one with house music, the other one above with Latin music - and three bars. With capacity 5000, they really cram punters in, so much so you often practically get pushed around, rather than actually going where you want to. There's little respite in the heaving dark room above where only the most experimental 'straight' boy dare stray.

Club 69Several bars and clubs are popular for "pre-dancing." Bach Bar is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 p.m., featuring Cupid Night on Wednesdays, Games on Thursdays and karaoke on Sundays. In spite of its small size, In Vitro offers enjoyable strip shows at reasonably low prices. It's open every night.

After a hard day's strolling, visit Inside, where Diego and Matías will give you a warm welcome in their charming restaurant-cum-bar. The menu includes many typical dishes, including a great range of Argentine meat. Dimly lit and decorated in cool red, this venue is quite popular among gays. Strippers, singers and dancers complete the crew. Don't miss their shows. Weekends are ideal to meet local gays.

Divided into three interconnected rooms, Sitges comprises a lounge facing the street, a round drinking bar and a large backyard. If you're alone, you probably won't be for long.

Tired of fashion and cool discos? Though noisy, Angels (Viamonte 2168; $5-11) offers strip shows and a heavily visited dark room ideal for flirting.

One of most glamorous restaurant-discos in BA is Palacio Buenos Aires (Adolfo Alsina 934; +54-11/4334-0099; $4-12). While listening to dance and house, you will be kindly assisted by attractive waiters in this stylish and renovated building, Friday and Saturday from 1 a.m.

Amerika (Gascón 1040; +54-11/685-4416; www.ameri-ka.com.ar; $3-9) offers three floors, each with its own music. A must.

Confusion (Scalabrini Ortiz 1721; $4-8) attracts drag queens and trannies, as its name suggests.

Contramano (Rodriguez Pena 1082. www.contramano.com; Wednesday to Sunday, $8 cover) was Argentina's first gay club, and is still very popular. It attracts an adult crowd in their 30s to 50s, who sometimes look like the cast of a Village People movie. The young guys seeking out older guys are generally hustlers.

Men to Men (Anchorena 1347; +54-11/4829-0664; $4-9) was born in 2002 and drew the attraction of the younger set with stripper shows.

Chueca (Soler 3283; +54-11/4963-3430; www.chuecabsas.com.ar; drinks $5-14) is another predancing venue with humor and stripper shows.

Cruising in Buenos Aires

Cruising In Buenos Aires

There are many ways to meet men and have sex in BA. Tom´s, just off the long Avenida Florida shopping street in the centre, is basically a venue for horny men with only one thing on their minds. Open Mon-Thur 12pm-3am and Fri-Sun 24 hours, it has one bar, lots of DVD booths with glory holes and special windows, an intricate maze, a darkroom and a basement for leather lovers.

Or to let off more steam, try A Full Sauna near Cordoba and Callao. Similarly open Mon-Thur 12pm-3am and Fri-Sun 24 hours, it has a gym, dry sauna, wet sauna, massage, sun beds, bar, Jacuzzi, labyrinth, cabins and lots of saucy vids screening. Talking of which, porn cinemas are very popular here - especially at lunchtimes and just after work! Try 4-screen ABC near Tom's - open Mon-Fri. 9am-6am and Sat-Sun from 12pm-6am; or 2-screen Box back up near Punto G, open Mon-Sat 2pm-6am; or 2-screen Eden on Santa Fé, open 24 hours daily.

You'll meet plenty of guys at A. Full (Via Monte, 1770, Barrio Norte; +54-11/4371-7263) -- best times are after work and not too late on weekends -- but the key person is the very skilled (legit) massage therapist. For around US $12, you'll get a great full-body rubdown. It's a nice way to end a day of walking and shopping.

San Telmo's Plaza Dorrego Antique Fair is awash with queers on a Sunday morning, looking for fleshy boyish bargains. The city's green Reserva Ecológica, between the likewise cruisy Puerto Madero docks and the River Plate, gets busy daily with wildlife of another sort.

B.A. Full

Full Spa Buenos Aires(via Monte 1770; +54-11/4371-7263; www.afullspa.com; open Mon.-Thu. noon-3 a.m., Fri.-Sun. 24 hours)

Well-designed sauna in an old colonial building one block away from downtown area (Callao and Cordoba Avenida) and close to Buenos Aires' gay nightlife. B.A. Full offers a large facility in a colonial style, featuring private rooms, "adventure showers" (recommended), a relaxation lounge, sauna, Jacuzzi, tanning beds, a gym and bar. The vibe is very friendly; the clientele comprises mostly young students and young professionals. There are also regular bears and leather nights. Free condoms are available. Full offers specials almost every night, including 50% off for visitors under 25. Discount coupons can be found at Bar Alvear, only blocks away.

Tom's

Toms Buenos Aires(via Monte 638, Subsuelo; +54-11/4322-4404; www.buenosairestoms.com, info@buenosairestoms.com; open Mon.-Thu. noon-3 a.m., Fri.-Sun. 24 hours)

Toms is one of the more popular sex clubs in Buenos Aires. Its always busy. The crowds are older than visitors to B.A. Full, and the action steamier. (When exhaustion sets in, crash out on the bean bags in the bar.) There is an intricate maze, darkroom, booths with glory holes and windows, and a leather basement. The décor in the lounge has funky blue lighting and a space-age feel, and the only drawback is that it's incredibly smoky (so what's new in South America, huh?). However, there are no lockers, so don't bring valuables. Note that there is no sign on the street, only a number; go down the stairs and to the right, and you'll find the entrance on the left.

Unikus

Unikus(Puyrredó N 1180, Recoleta; +54-11/4621-7792; www.unikusspa.com.ar; open daily 11 a.m.-midnight)

Located a few blocks from an outdoor cruising area, Unikus is a traditional sauna with bar, snacks, videos, a small cruising maze and four glory-hole cubicles. Unikus was very popular a couple of years ago, but a limited selection of rooms and play areas, as well as some unattractive regulars, has seen its popularity decline somewhat of late.

Olimpo

(via Monte 723, Maipú, around cornder from Liberador Sheraton; +54-11/4322-6465)
This spa offers a small workout room, massage, sauna, steam and private rooms with beds. Be sure to check out the big room for group action. Attracts plenty of businessmen and is often busy after work in the late afternoon.

Box Cinema

(Laprida 1423; open Mon-Sat 2 p.m.-6 a.m., Sun 4p.m.-4 a.m.)
There are two cinemas here, one gay and one straight, as well as a dark room. It's a wild scene, with sex happening just about everywhere. It pulls in young students and older workers, all of whom come from the surrounding well-heeled neighborhood (expect lawyers and teachers).

Zoom

Zoom Saunashttp://www.zoombuenosaires.com/

The newest sex club in Buenos Aires. Opened in June 2006. It's like Tom's, but newer and a bit bigger.Entrance price is 10 pesos (and they have specials); Labirynth and gloryholes; bathroom to clean up; loung area and bar; one drink free with entrance price (soft drink or beer)
Who goes there: Mixed crowd and ages, young skaters and couriers, after work crowd

Escorts vary greatly. There are several types. First you have your high-class models and go-go boys, making money on the side. They generally will visit your 5 star hotel or apartment by appointment through an agency or site. Rates tend to be similar to most Western European countries.

Remember not all escorts speak English, so a basic understanding of Spanish might be of help.

Call boys who advertise on the web and in the Gay Magazines also do out-calls. Some may offer services in their own apartments.

Finally you have street hustlers (also known as taxi-boys) who cruise teh gay areas. They generally tend to think of themselves as stright top men.

Most gay people who hook up with escorts and even one night stands then to take a room in an albergue transitorio (sex hotel).Albergues transitorios are generally clean, all rooms have private bathrooms and additional amenities according to the rate or category of the sex hotel (Jacuzzi, waterbeds, room service, porno movies on the TV, etc.).

Prostitution is not illegal in Buenos Aires, however there are some criminal codes whereby it is illegal to offer or ask for paid sex if it takes place less than 2 blocks from a residential area, school or church.

  2. Great summary of the places! Glam has become completely IMPOSSIBLE. They let so many people in that you can't even move. Personally, I don't recommend going on Saturdays because it's just so uncomfortable with so many people. On Thursdays, it's a bit better.

Another thing I've been doing is bathroom action. Be careful because if the police find you, it could be a problem. But if you go places where there isn't a police presence, it can be pretty hot. I've been using http://www.encontrameaca.com to hook up with guys as well.

BA has a lot to offer!!! The gays are hot and wild. I love it!!
