Jake Raynard has posted a YouTube video, eloquently and earnestly speaking out after his September 5 gay-bashing attack in Thunder Bay, Canada, to share his feelings and thoughts. Raynard began by saying although his sexuality is not "the cornerstone of [his] existence," Thunder Bay has become increasingly unsafe for gay people and he understands why some are leaving the community for “greener pastures."
See Raynard's complete statement below:
Raynard, a Thunder Bay native who now lives in Toronto, was visiting his hometown for a family event the weekend he was attacked. On the video said he was touched by the worldwide support he's received on the Internet, with a Facebook support group growing by thousands of members every day and e-mails from as far away as Hong Kong. "But what that says to me," Raynard continued, "is there are a lot of voices globally that aren't being heard and that need advocacy and are starving for someone like myself to stand up and fight for these rights and say 'No, this isn't right' and 'No, I'm not going to be quiet about this' and ‘No, I'm going to make a media stink about this until I need to stop, because the problem's not resolved.’"
"When things aren't talked about, that's when these horrible crimes are allowed to happen," he concluded.
